Service
Service-learning is an integral component of Mercer’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program. Through three structured service-learning courses, students apply their skills in meaningful, community-based settings designed around preparation, service, and reflection.
Students work with participants across the lifespan—children, adults, and older adults—in activities focused on prevention, health promotion, fitness, and wellness. Whether providing mobility assistance, leading wellness workshops, or supporting community health initiatives, students make a real impact while developing communication, compassion, cultural competence, and advocacy skills.
DPT students also have the opportunity to participate in a service-learning elective in Vietnam. In partnership with Mercer’s School of Engineering, students and faculty collaborate to provide health screening, diabetic foot care, prosthetic design and fitting, neurologic physical therapy services, and continuing education for local rehabilitation therapists. This global experience enhances cross-cultural competence, teamwork, and professional growth.
